Acetic acid is a primary inhibitory by-product in Escherichia coli cultivation. Its accumulation adversely affects cellular growth, metabolism, and the synthesis of desired recombinant or metabolic products, primarily due to cytoplasmic acidification and disruption of energy metabolism [180].
