The hpaB gene of certain Escherichia coli strains encodes a 4-hydroxyphenylacetate 3-hydroxylase that is FADH2-dependent. This enzyme catalyzes the oxidation of 4-hydroxyphenylacetate to 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetate and can also convert L-tyrosine into L-DOPA [334].
